Tradition Forces Girls Into Prostitution
When most of us think of tradition we recall Thanksgiving meals spent with family, attending a candle light service on Christmas Eve, or other traditions we enjoy here in the US. The CNN Freedom Project has released an article, “Tradition forces girls into prostitution“, that puts a chilling spin on what tradition means to some young girls. “In some Indian villages, girls are sent into prostitution by their families – a tradition that began as religious obligation but is now continued for money” writes the editor of The CNN Freedom Project.
“Slumdog Millionaire” star Anil Kapoor is working to expose the practice, and try to stop the tradition. He tells CNN Freedom Project that “Often, young girls are pushed into the sex business by their own fathers and brothers. The men see nothing wrong with it. They say it is a tradition that has been passed down through generations. It began with the devdasi culture (devdasi means servant of God).”
