“In the midst of a very severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity. For I testify that they gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability. Entirely on their own, they urgently pleaded with us for the privilege of sharing in this service to the Lord’s people. And they exceeded our expectations: They gave themselves first of all to the Lord, and then by the will of God also to us.” ~2 Corinthians 8:2-5

So says the apostle Paul when he praises one of the early Christian communities for giving beyond their means. Despite their own financial difficulties, they did not hesitate to give what they had to those in need.

At Giving Tuesday, Bill and Melinda Gates share why they believe generosity is important and highlight four organizations they support (including World Vision!):

“Everyone has their own reasons for giving back. For us, it’s simply about making the world a more fair and equitable place. We know we were very lucky to grow up where we did, when we did. We believe everyone deserves the chance to live a healthy, productive life. Those are the values we learned from our families, and they’re why we started our foundation.”

Today we invite you to share a prayer that God would stir gratitude and generosity in the hearts of many this season.
