Pakistani acid attack victim takes her own life

Fakhra Yunus, a Pakistani woman disfigured 13 years ago in a high-profile acid attack, jumped to her death last weekend after reportedly staring at her face in the mirror and weeping. She was living in Italy, where she received intensive counseling and dozens of plastic surgeries, because in Pakistan “she was provided nothing … but disdain … and trashed,” writes activist Tehmina Durrani.

Last month the documentary “Saving Face,” which shone a light on acid attacks in Pakistan, won an Oscar for Best Documentary (Short Subject).
