Call to Prayer: Mali’s Children in Crisis

Strong Women, Strong World already has a heart for Mali, raising money for a water project that many WOV chapters support (including the East Bay chapter which has faithfully come alongside this project since 2009).  However, right now, as air strikes continue to rain over Mali, onto the women and children that we hold dear to our hearts, they not only need the overflow of our finances for water – they need the overflow of our hearts in prayer.

It is estimated that 5 million Malians are affected by this conflict, increasing the already struggling food shortages and poor nutrition far too familiar in that country.  Hundreds of thousands of people are being displaced by the fighting, separating children from parents, sending people to refugee camps and out of the farms they have worked hard to sustain.

In March 2012 a rebel group called “the Signatories of Blood” ( or “Battalion of Blood”) led a coup on Mali’s French government. The rebel group is made up of Islamist extremists, taking hostages and having no care for those left dead in their tracks. The group is advancing towards Bamako, only increasing the number of civilian casualties, refugees, and a further collapsing economy.

As danger rains around the children stuck in the middle of this conflict, let us pour our prayers like rain upon them that they may know the protection of our great God.  If we have no prayers or cries of our own, God’s word graciously gives us a guide:

He will cover you with his feathers,
      and under his wings you will find refuge;
his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.
You will not fear the terror of night,
nor the arrow that flies by day,
nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness,
nor the plague that destroys at midday.
A thousand may fall at your side,
ten thousand at your right hand,
but it will not come near you.
You will only observe with your eyes
and see the punishment of the wicked.
If you make the Most High your dwelling—
even the Lord, who is my refuge—
then no harm will befall you,
no disaster will come near your tent.
For he will command his angels concerning you
to guard you in all your ways.”
